Filter & Blocking Protection

The Internet is now a globally used phrase and word. From its beginnings as a communications medium for military scientists, it has exploded into a vehicle used in homes, schools, businesses and government. It was the defining force at the end of the 20th century, the ultimate learning programme at the beginning of the 21st century, and its potential for education and research, is still in many ways untapped.

Illegal, harmful content and misconduct on the Internet is a continuing concern for our Police agencies, industry and end-users, particularly parents and educators. Europe has been a forerunner in the fight against illegal and harmful content since 1996.

The level of Internet use and new technologies is growing and Internet penetration currently exceeds 90% for businesses and schools. The implementation of blockers & filters on networks is common practice by IT managers today. It gives us the peace of mind that whatever misuse happens, while using our facility workstations, we will be able to stop all abuse.

How wrong we are! URL based filters will help stop a level of unacceptable behaviour. The blockers will stop access to some websites promoting inappropriate material, but who will stop the intelligent enemy, Commercial software developers and more importantly switched on end users, who bombard these perimeter security products on a daily basis? They will still get to the desktop.

Well documented facts and reports by global security and law enforcement agencies state that over 75% of misuse will come from within our own Company, School or Home Network.

A percentage of misuse will come from the Internet, but more importantly, it will be cunningly disguised in general offline usage, i.e. Documents, Spreadsheets and Presentations etc., or from any application that has been loaded above the operating system. These products are the carriers of the inappropriate material that float throughout the depths of the web to your network.

Policy Central Professional is a fulle adapted security software product , which not only gives you filter and blocking parameters, but gives the Senior Management Team control and a more in-depth analysis of end user mentality both on and off the Internet. It more importantly gives your facility the ability to educate in correct use and act in a socially acceptable way.

Self Harming

This Capture was a student hoping to make her own knife and scare a member of a rival school gang. The incident was collected by Policy Central Professional and reported to the Senior Management Team. The forensic evidence was effective in stopping an on-going feud which was boiling beneath the school environment. Pupils were scared to report any incidents due to assumed repercussions.

Bullying

From Friend to Foe to Bullying.. The selection of captures proved that the individuals involved were part of a small elite gang of thugs operating in the school environment. Bullying comes in many shapes and other school captures had documented evidence buried deep in the .My Documents. area of pupils. They had been detailing the abuse they were receiving but in many cases could not bring themselves to display the information.

Chat Room Scenarios

Chat Room captures are now fully available as forensic evidence as this capture of criminal activity proves. The appropriate departments were notified, which resulted in a full investigation by the school, police authorities and parents. The pupils involved could not deny the incident with the full audit trail of Why, Where and When. After investigation the incident was linked to an actual mugging.

Suicide

The information contained in this capture is a sample of images gathered in ALL suspected suicide or self harm cases

  1. The reason to die or harm was blown out of all proportion
  2. Friends sent the information of the best sites to them
  3. After deciding the best method from Internet help, a note would be left for friends that would not be found
  4. After sending the cry for help to themselves, they became distraught because nobody answered it - Child Reasoning.
The most disturbing case to date captured was the child wanting to take anti-freeze. No return was advised by her internet friends. The child was stopped by the school in time.

Pornography

Pornography sites have been captured in every shape or form
  • Softcore
  • Spam
  • Hardcore
  • Pop-up
  • S & M
  • Personal
  • Forced
  • Attachments
  • Drugged
  • On-line (Internet)
  • Web Napped Sites
  • Offline (MS Word etc)

  • Racism

Racial Violence in any shape or form is a scourge in any free and democratic society. This capture enabled the police authorities to not only stop a serious confrontation that may have caused a death or serious injury, but it also allowed the facility to adopt and promote a more interactive program dealing with this issue. Once again the original problem had been festering below the surface unknown to the Senior Management Team.

    Downloading Games

Games downloading are a major stress risk to any network. The captures relating to this misuse was in most cases while they run in the background to other applications. The offenders would generally commence the download and then carry on with normal work load.

    Gambling & Theft

Gambling is on the increase in many schools and is easily pinpointed by the Policy Central software suite. During recent evaluations the access to these types of sites has dramatically risen. The average bet placed by pupils is between £5 - £10 and in one case a student was recorded as placing over £350 in one single day. The question must be asked "Where can they find this sort of money to gamble?" A full investigation by the school found theft as the answer.

    Downloading

Downloading has been pinpointed as a massive problem in EVERY school evaluated. The timings of downloading (Music, Films, and MP3 etc) starts from 8.30am to late. The stress on the school networks can only be described as "High Risk" with sites like Kazaa using the network as a pier point. The use of Policy Central Professional in all cases has allowed each network to unblock the tailbacks in their networks. This has ensured a faster and more efficient tool for the classroom use.
