Virtual Private Networking
SmoothNode provides VPN connectivity for the endpoints of a VPN network, eg branch office locations that require VPN connectivity back to Head Office. SmoothNode is a companion product to SmoothTunnel, allowing a single VPN tunnel to be established from a remote location to a SmoothTunnel gateway. There is no restriction upon the number of PCs that can use the VPN tunnel. A SmoothNode VPN tunnel allows remote users to access Head Office facilities as though they were a local user, including the ability to share files and printers on Microsoft networks, retrieve and send email and use central site applications including those running on Citrix.

Like the SmoothTunnel gateway, SmoothNode supports both x509 Certificate and Pre-Shared Key (PSK, Shared Secret) Authentication, 3DES, AES and several other encryption algorithms. SmoothNode does not require a static public IP address, making SmoothNode ideal for use with the majority of ADSL and ISDN connections that only provide a dynamic IP address.

SmoothNode can operate in "Remote Gateway" mode, in which all traffic from the remote VPN location is routed via the VPN Gateway (eg SmoothTunnel at Head Office) and not directly to the Internet. This is typically used to enforce central site policies such as Web Content Filtering and Anti-Virus upon remote users. The VPN tunnel can also enable Head Office staff to remotely support and administer PCs at the branch office using tools like Microsoft Remote Desktop and VNC.

Unlike SmoothTunnel, SmoothNode does not include a Certificate Authority nor does it support Road Warriors (mobile users).
