Corporate Guardian
Inappropriate Internet usage means a lot more than browsing pornography. It is a problem that cannot be ignored, for allowing users unrestricted Internet access can result in serious financial, legal and social consequences. Bad publicity, time wasting, copyright violation as a result of music downloads, the viewing of explicit content and co-worker complaints are all problems that occur unless controls are put in place. Yet many organisations are fearful of the complexity and cost of the content filtering solutions - but SmoothWall has the answer, Corporate Guardian, the most effective, affordable and easy-to-use solution available.

Dynamic Content Analysis is the key technology that makes SmoothWall's Guardian solutions so much more effective than other filtering products. The Dynamic Content Analysis filter scans web pages for words and phrases from numerous categories, including pornography, violence, drugs, racial hatred and gambling. A sophisticated page weighting system recognises content that is clearly work related, so avoiding the problem of over blocking medical and technical pages experienced by other content filters.

Our Dynamic Content Analysis technology works for every web page in existence, regardless of whether it has ever been seen before or categorised, ensuring that users are not exposed to unsuitable or illegal content. With more than half a million new pages being added to the web every day, the traditional blocklist technique of pre-categorising all web pages is becoming increasingly unworkable.

Integration with Microsoft Active Directory user authentication systems avoids the need to replicate or maintain user IDs and passwords on the Corporate Guardian system. The membership of Windows security groups is used to determine which filter rule-set is applied to each user. Thus no routine user management is required on the Corporate Guardian system; this being performed on the Windows 2000 or 2003 server.

Corporate Guardian includes comprehensive reporting facilities to monitor Internet usage. Numerous standard reports provide managers with information in both text and graphical formats on the most visited sites, attempted access to blocked pages, user activity and bandwidth utilisation. A "Drill down" mechanism allows any information to be explored to a greater depth, for example, from a report of blocked sites find which people have been attempting to access any particular site.

Corporate Guardian keeps objectionable content at bay, reduces time wasting and avoids legal issues by ensuring that Internet usage is work related.

SmoothGuardian determines the correct filtering policy to apply based on the user identity or the IP address of the user PC. In conjunction with Advanced Firewall, user identity is determined by verifying username and password against a Microsoft Active Directory® or other LDAP authentication system. This avoids the need to replicate or maintain user IDs and passwords on the SmoothWall system. Advanced Firewall parses the list of Windows security groups of which the user is a member in order to determine the filter policy and rule-set to apply to the user. Thus no routine user management is required on the Advanced Firewall system; this being performed on the Windows 2000 or 2003 server.

The new malicious code detection features of SmoothGuardian 4.0 detect and remove common in-page exploits from HTML web pages, such as Active-X controls, Java Applets and Scripts. Such in-page exploits are not recognised by traditional anti-virus software, yet are often used to install spyware, viruses and Trojan horse software on user PCs. Likewise, the new malicious URL detection features help to prevent users falling victim to phishing scams, where they are directed to bogus websites by emails containing spoof URLs that appear to come from banks and other legitimate senders.

Dynamic Guardian Analysis
Dynamic Content Analysis is the technology that makes SmoothWall's Guardian so effective at blocking unwanted or objectionable web content. Most web filters (note we do not call them content filters) rely upon a blocklist of several million pre-categorised web sites and pages. This may sound impressive until one takes into account that Google currently indexes more than nine billion web pages and at least half a million new web pages are created every day. The growth of the web is seemingly exponential - thus keeping pace with a comprehensive blocklist is becoming an ever more difficult, if not an impossible, task. Furthermore it is not foolproof, for if a user accesses the web via an external proxy server

it may well be possible to fool such blocklist systems into believing that all web pages are coming from an acceptable source. Likewise search engines will display links and page snippets from offensive or pornographic web sites, sometimes even when the search terms are totally inoffensive.

The solution is to examine the actual page content, not where it appears to come from.

SmoothWall's Guardian web content filtering products incorporate a proxy server that processes all user requests for web pages. As web pages are received, the Dynamic Content Analysis engine compares the text against categorised word and phrase lists, looking for objectionable, non work-related and positive work-related content. Every time a match is made, a weighting value for the word or phrase is added to a page score. Matching of positive work-related phrases will offset the presence of words from other categories, to avoid the false blocking of medical related pages for example. Once the page score reaches a threshold blocking value then the page will be blocked and a "Blocked Page" message sent to the user's computer instead of the requested web page. Guardian does all this at lightning speed; its Dynamic Content Analysis engine works can examine the entire content of a typical novel in just a fraction of a second.

User authentication determines the content filtering policy that needs to be applied, using configurable filter rule-sets for particular user groups. The blocking threshold for a rule-set would be set appropriate to members of the group, typically being set very low for young children, a moderate value for high school children and higher still for most adults. Different word and phrase categories can be enabled or disabled for each filter rule-set. For example, the marketing department could be allowed to view news sites but for other users could be denied access to such pages, or only allowed access at certain times of day. System administrators can even add their own words, phrases and weightings into custom category lists to fine tune filtering behaviour specifically for their organisation.

It is the speed and sophistication of our Dynamic Content Analysis technology that makes it possible for Guardian to analyse the actual page content. Most web filters only perform the quick and simplistic action of checking URLs against a blocklist. Guardian is the "true" web content filter, the most accurate, the fastest and most flexible solution available.
